Spring

Canon 5D 50mm f2.8 1/1600s ISO100

Rant: I normally reduce my photos to size 1500 on the long edge for blog postings. Honestly, I do not see any difference between my old and new camera in terms of quality at this resolution. I also realise, by now and a bit late, that I do not pixel peep and I do not need 20m+ pixels for good prints.

May be I should return my camera. Unfortunately I sold my old 5D already at a steep discount to a good friend!

Less is always more. Design is about how it works, and how to present the idea to your audience in the simplest way possible.

Personally I like my previous one better. What do you think?

Eternal Fire

Here flammable gas flows eternally from underground, ever lighting the darkness and guiding the visitors.

Things changed so much personally with life, but I continue to move on.

Tree and new leaves

Canon 5D ISO400 1/125s f5.6 50mm

I believe this was my second or third attempt in making a picture of this tree. I wanted to show the whole tree with its leaves, in their special pale new green colors. I made probably three to four attempts to develop this in Lightroom before finally landing on this color revision.

Another difficulty is controlling the depth of field. The tree, due to its round dimensions, needs a larger field to be in focus, and it's tremendously difficult to determine if a leave is in focus on the camera screen under sunlight.

Would benefit from darker blacks.   Try it out yourself...

Leaves

DOF and wind must be considered. When the sunlight passes through the leaves, it creates beautiful colors and patterns. Preferably a matching color background next time, such as a vivid blue sky. Remember to check the histogram for exposure errors, such as clipping.

This picture would benefit tremendously from a few points of saturation boost.  In fact, download the file and try it out yourself.  Enhance the yellow and green colors.

Rhododendron

A terrible rendering, resulting from my processing. I did not have a raw converter in hand, and just exported the underexposed jpg file from Picasa. (apparently the latter isn't a good raw processor) I then adjusted the exposure, saturation and sharpening using Adobo Photoshop Express. Disastrous result, especially in lack of details in shadows.

Didn't think of composition at all when taking this picture.  The second try was even worse, in effect I made a mock of national flag of Japan.  However, I could never stop to appreciate nature's beauty in spring time.

Rose

Do you like this better, or the black and white one? I like the color version, because my black and white conversion skill is not up to speed.

Advances in digital darkroom is simply dazzling (click "portfolio"). Where is the line between a fine art picture, a photograph, and a fake one?

Controlling depth of field is vastly important for close range and macro photography. Compare this with the picture I posted yesterday and immediately you can see the difference.

I like the last variation better, with a more balancing composition.
